Updated: 5 October 2026. Bus fares, the hotel policies linked below, VATC rates and the mausoleum closure dates were checked in October. Car fares are estimates. US$ prices use a rounded conversion of 26,000 VND to US$1.
Arriving in Hanoi at 5am has one big catch. Your hotel room may not be ready for hours. Breakfast and a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, before the roads get busy, will fill some of that time. It’s a nice start if you slept on the way. If you didn’t, honestly, I’d skip the sightseeing and spend the morning in bed.
For a Hanoi early morning arrival, the hotel comes first. Maybe you only need somewhere to leave your bags. Or maybe you want to go straight to a room. For that, book the night before and ask the hotel to confirm they’ll keep the room for you. Either way, get their reply before you travel, especially if you’re paying for that extra night.
How you arrive matters too. A 5am bus may drop you right in the Old Quarter. A 5am flight is a different story, because at Noi Bai you still have immigration, the baggage belt and the drive into town ahead of you. The Sapa night train sits in between. It brings you into the city, and the Old Quarter is a short car ride from the station.
Hanoi Early Morning Arrival: Key Takeaways
- For a bed on arrival: book the night before, and get the hotel to confirm it will hold the room. A note on your booking is only a request, not a promise.
- Getting into town: a car is the easier option with luggage. Allow roughly 30–50 minutes for the drive after you leave the terminal.
- Cheaper buses: the first Bus 17 from T1 is at 5:10am and costs 15,000 VND. Noi Bai lists the first Bus 86 at 7am, costing 50,000 VND per person.
- Before check-in: drop your bags at the hotel (arrange this first), then walk to Hoan Kiem Lake. Want a shower before you head into town? VATC has a paid one in T2’s public area.
From Noi Bai Airport to the Old Quarter at Dawn
Noi Bai International Airport (Sân bay Nội Bài) is roughly 30 km from the Old Quarter. You’ll arrive at Terminal 2 (T2) on an international flight, or Terminal 1 (T1) on a domestic flight. Finding a car that early is easy enough. Getting out of the airport is the part you can’t predict.
How long until you’re out of the airport?
Some mornings, passport control is quick. Other mornings, several flights land close together and everyone queues at once. Then you wait for your bags. So don’t make a plan that needs you at the hotel within an hour of landing. That leaves very little room for either delay.
Sort out your entry documents before you fly. The rules depend on your passport, the length of your stay and the reason for the trip. E-visa travellers should apply on Vietnam’s official e-visa portal and not travel until it’s approved. E-visas can be valid for up to 90 days. Save a copy and read the passport details and dates on it twice.
Before you leave the terminal
- Get online. Airport Wi-Fi is fine inside the terminal. But once you’re outside looking for your driver, you’ll want your own data. If your phone takes an eSIM, set one up before the trip. If not, there are SIM counters at the airport.
- Take out some cash. Small dong notes make it easier to pay at breakfast stalls and anywhere else you need cash. At the ATM, check the fee on the screen before you accept.
- Find the right pickup point. When you have got the bags, just follow the instructions provided through the ride app. The old screenshot might not work since Grab has updated their pickup service at the airports from August 2026.
Your transport options at 5am
| Option | Early-morning availability | Planning cost | Journey time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grab, Be or Xanh SM car | Check the app for available drivers | About 250,000–400,000 VND (US$10–15) per standard car, before any extra charges | About 30–50 minutes |
| Taxi from the official rank | Available for arriving flights | Allow about 300,000–450,000 VND (US$12–17) per car. Ask if it’s metered or a fixed fare | About 30–50 minutes |
| Pre-booked car or hotel pickup | At your agreed arrival time | Allow roughly US$15–25 (390,000–650,000 VND) per standard car; get a total quote | About 30–50 minutes |
| Bus 86 | First airport departure listed at 7am | 50,000 VND (about US$1.90) per person | Allow about 50–70 minutes, plus the walk to your hotel |
| Bus 17, from T1 | First airport departure listed at 5:10am | 15,000 VND (about US$0.60) per person | Allow about 70–90 minutes to Long Bien interchange |
Bus prices and first departures come from Noi Bai Airport’s transport page. Car fares and journey times are estimates. The price also depends on demand, the car size, any waiting time and airport fees.
For two or more people with luggage, I’d pay for a car and share the fare. Bus 86 makes more sense when you’re travelling alone and watching the budget, especially if you reach the exit close to 7am. Even if you land at 5am, immigration and the wait for bags may use up much of the time before that first bus anyway.
Bus 17 is the cheaper, slower choice. It runs from T1 to the Long Bien bus interchange on the edge of the Old Quarter, taking about 70–90 minutes. If you land at T2, you first need the free shuttle to T1, which starts at 5am. Add the shuttle and the waiting to the bus time, then ask yourself if the saving is really worth it. And check the current timetable before you travel.
Finding your car at the airport
If you booked a car in the app, check that the number plate and the driver’s details match your booking before you get in. Wait at the pickup point the app shows you. For a regular taxi, go to the official rank, and politely say no to anyone offering you a ride inside arrivals.
Airport access charges can sit on top of the app fare, as Grab’s airport guidance explains. Booking a private transfer? Ask for parking and tolls to be included in the quote, and find out what they charge for waiting if your flight is late. That way, the total won’t surprise you.
Staying near Hoan Kiem Lake? Your hotel may be inside the weekend pedestrian zone. From Friday evening through Sunday night, cars can’t enter those streets. Ask the hotel where your driver should drop you. You may have to walk the last bit with your bags.
Arriving by Sapa Night Train or Sleeper Bus
The overnight train from Lao Cai
One thing first. The Sapa night train doesn’t actually leave from Sapa. It leaves from Lao Cai. Chapa lists the return SP4 service as departing at 9:30pm from Lao Cai and reaching Hanoi at 5:35am. Use the time on your ticket if it differs.
Hanoi Railway Station has entrances on Le Duan and Tran Quy Cap streets, on opposite sides of the tracks. If you don’t know which exit you came out of, it’s easy to send your Grab to the wrong side, and then the driver has to go all the way round. Tran Quy Cap is often called Gate B, but don’t assume every Sapa passenger comes out there. Operators have facilities on Le Duan too. Chapa’s FAQ has the timetable and station details.
The Old Quarter is a short car ride from the station. Drop your bags at the hotel (as you arranged), and Hoan Kiem Lake makes an easy next stop. There’s also Thong Nhat Park (Công viên Thống Nhất), south of the station, for a morning walk. Your route there will depend on which station exit you use.
Sleeper buses from Ha Giang and Sapa
Ask the bus company for the exact drop-off address before you get on. “Hanoi” could mean somewhere in or near the Old Quarter. It could also mean My Dinh bus station, roughly 10 km west of the centre. That’s a big difference at 4am. Timing can be loose too. A night bus may pull in before sunrise, earlier than the time printed on your ticket.
If you’re dropped off at 3am or 4am, you need a room or an indoor place to wait. Arrange it before you travel, and save the lake for later, when people start coming out to exercise.
Can You Check In at 5am? Hanoi Hotel Rules and Costs
Usually not, unless you plan for it. At many Hanoi hotels, check-in starts at 2pm, and some make it 3pm. Turn up at dawn and the room you booked may still have last night’s guest in it. An “early check-in” request on the booking form won’t keep an empty room waiting for you.
How much might early check-in cost?
Two Hanoi hotels, Meritel and Selah, publish the early check-in charges below. They’re useful examples. But check the band for the time you’ll actually reach reception, not the time you land. Those two times can be quite far apart.
| Hotel | Arrival at reception | Published surcharge |
|---|---|---|
| Meritel Hanoi | Before 7am / 7–10am / 10am–1pm | 100% / 50% / 30% of the first night’s room rate |
| Selah Hanoi | Before 7am / 8–10am / 11am–1pm | 100% / 50% / 30% of the room rate; inclusions differ by band |
Sources: Meritel’s terms and Selah’s policy. At both, an early room depends on availability. Selah’s published bands don’t cover 7–8am or 10–11am. If you expect to arrive then, ask the hotel which charge applies.
Sometimes you get lucky. A clean room is free, and the hotel lets you in early without charging. Great if it happens, but don’t build your morning around it. If it doesn’t, you’re still waiting until the afternoon.
Booking the night before
Want a bed the moment you arrive? Book from the night before. A morning arrival on 12 October means starting the booking on 11 October. If you’re staying that evening too, book the night of 12 October as well. The 11th on its own would normally only cover you until checkout on the 12th.
Ask the hotel to confirm that it will hold your room until you arrive in the morning. Skip this, and your booking could be marked as a no-show overnight. Give them your flight number and the time you expect to reach reception, then save their reply.
Yes, you’re paying for a night you hardly use. But it buys you a shower and somewhere to sleep on arrival, with the room already booked and held. After a long-haul flight, or with tired children, that may be worth more than a morning of sightseeing. And there’s no early check-in fee to deal with at reception.
Send this if you’ve booked the previous night
Hello! My booking [reference] starts on [previous date]. I won’t arrive until about [time] on the morning of [arrival date], but I’ve booked the night before so I can go straight to the room. Please confirm that you’ll hold it for me and won’t mark the booking as a no-show. My flight number is [number]. Thank you!
Send this if you only need to leave your bags
Hello! I’m booked with you from [date] and expect to reach the hotel at about [time] that morning. Can I leave my bags before check-in, and will someone be there to let me in? Is there somewhere I could shower or sit while I wait? Please let me know the charges, including the cost of an early room if one is available. Thank you!
Some small hotels close their front door overnight. So in your message, ask how you’ll get in, not just what happens to your bags. Save their phone number too, and check whether reception prefers WhatsApp, Zalo or the booking app.
Where to Leave Your Luggage Before Check-In
Leaving bags at your hotel
Your hotel is usually the easiest place for your bags, and many keep luggage free for guests who haven’t checked in yet. The real question at 5am is who will open the door and take it. Sort that out before you pay for storage anywhere else.
Nexy Hostel, for instance, lists free luggage storage and reception staffed around the clock. Check-in is 3pm, but guests can ask about leaving bags earlier while they wait for a bed.
| Option | Cost | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Your hotel or hostel | Often free for arriving guests | Who will be at reception, where the bags are kept and when you can collect them |
| A booked storage location | Check the price for your bag and dates; the Bounce example below advertises from US$2.95 a day | Actual opening hours and the final booking total |
| Noi Bai T2 luggage storage | Ask the counter for the current tariff | Opening hours and whether the price covers your whole storage period |
If your hotel is out of the way, a booked storage counter may be easier. Bounce’s location at 22A Quan Su is listed as open 24 hours, and the price depends on the dates and bag size you enter. Read the access instructions for that address. One thing to watch for: “24-hour support” on a storage website can just mean customer service, not a counter you can walk into all night.
At Noi Bai, the T2 left-luggage counter is on the second floor in the public east wing. Call +84 24 3587 6599 for opening hours and prices. Leaving luggage at the airport makes most sense when you’ll be flying out of Noi Bai again soon.
Wheeling a suitcase through the Old Quarter is no fun. Breakfast stalls and parked motorbikes take up much of the pavement, so store it somewhere first. Keep your passport, valuables and the things you need that morning in a smaller bag that stays with you.
For somewhere to rest before check-in, see the room and sleep options below.
No Room Yet? Where to Sleep, Shower or Wait
Sleep pods at Noi Bai Airport
VATC SleepPod has small sleeping rooms on the third floor of T1 and the second floor of T2. Both are in the public areas, so international arrivals need to clear immigration and customs before using them. The minimum hourly booking is three hours.
| Booking | 5 May–31 October | 1 November–4 May |
|---|---|---|
| Single pod, minimum 3 hours | 629,370 VND (about US$24) | 663,390 VND (about US$26) |
| Twin pod, minimum 3 hours | 714,420 VND (about US$27) | 748,440 VND (about US$29) |
| Night surcharge for hourly check-in, midnight–6am | 300,000 VND extra per room | 500,000 VND extra per room |
At 5am, you’ll pay the night surcharge as well as the hourly room rate. That brings a three-hour single-pod stay to 929,370 VND in May–October or 1,163,390 VND in November–early May, about US$36 or US$45. The VATC rate card also lists full-day and overnight packages, which don’t carry that surcharge. Compare those before choosing the hourly option.
There’s no private bathroom in a pod, and the shower costs extra. That’s fine for a layover. But if you’re going into town anyway, compare it with an extra hotel night in Hanoi. A room with your own shower may cost about the same.
A shower at T2, without booking a room
VATC ShowerPod takes shower bookings separately, so you don’t need a bed. You’ll find it on the second floor of T2, in the public area outside the restricted passenger zone. The listed price of 200,000 VND (about US$7.70) gives you 30 minutes, a towel and basic toiletries.
It advertises a 24-hour service. Call +84 24 3584 3838 to book a time and confirm the total. It’s a handy way to freshen up before the drive into town if your hotel can’t offer a shower before check-in.
A room for a few hours in Hanoi
Ask your hotel about a room with a shower for a few hours before looking elsewhere. Go2Joy also lists hourly rooms in Hanoi, but check the start time as carefully as the price. A deal that starts at noon is no use when you arrive at dawn. Look through the bathroom details and recent guest photos, and make sure the location works for you.
You don’t always need a room to get a shower. Some hotels have a shared one that guests can use before check-in, so add that question to your arrival message. Some hostels may sell shower access too, but agree it with them before you turn up.
Where to sit for a while
If I had to wait, I’d start with the hotel lounge, especially if it’s raining. Your luggage is right there. Just make sure reception is happy for you to sit around. After that, these are the places to try, roughly in this order:
- Hoan Kiem Lake: on a dry morning, you can sit for a while or walk before breakfast. Walkers and exercise groups start gathering from roughly 5am.
- A cafe: many open around 7am, including Cafe Giang. Order something while you sit, and free up the table if others are waiting.
- A 24-hour convenience store: useful for water and snacks, although seating and opening hours depend on the branch.
Be honest with yourself, though. After a night of travel, there’s only so much waiting you can take. If you’re struggling to keep your eyes open, paying for a room may be the better use of your morning.
What to Do in Hanoi Before Check-In
Keep this morning simple: breakfast, a walk and maybe one visit later on. That’s plenty. The times below assume a 5am landing, with room for things to run late. If the airport is slow, drop a stop instead of rushing breakfast. Same if you’re tired.
| Approximate time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 5–6am, or longer | Clear immigration, collect your bags and sort out your ride into town. Allow longer if you’ve booked a shower at T2. |
| Around 6–7am | Head to the Old Quarter and drop your bags at the hotel. If you booked the night before, go straight up to your room and sleep. |
| Once your bags are sorted | Walk down to Hoan Kiem Lake. Missed the exercise groups? You can still have a slow walk before breakfast. |
| Around 7–8:30am | Pho or sticky rice, then egg coffee at Cafe Giang. If the breakfast queue is too long, eat somewhere nearby. |
| Around 9–10:30am | If you feel up to it, take a short car ride to the Temple of Literature. A long, lazy cafe break is fine too. |
| Late morning | Ask reception whether the room is ready and what early check-in would cost. Otherwise, have lunch nearby. |
| Your booked check-in time | Check in, shower and rest. This is usually 2pm, or 3pm at some hotels. |
The Temple of Literature doesn’t open until 8am, so save it for later in the morning. Daily hours are 8am–5pm and adult entry costs 70,000 VND, about US$2.70. The complex includes the historic Imperial Academy. Leave it for another day if you’re too tired to take much in.
Came in on a night train or sleeper bus? Start this plan from the hotel bag drop. With children, breakfast and the lake may be plenty. Only add another stop if everyone still feels up to it.
The Best Things to See in Hanoi Before 8am
Hoan Kiem Lake’s morning workout
Between roughly 5am and 7am, Hoan Kiem Lake (Hồ Hoàn Kiếm) has walkers, tai chi groups, dancing and aerobics around the water. Some groups bring a speaker and play music. Other stretches are quieter. Once your bags are at the hotel, this is where I’d walk first.
The whole circuit is about 1.75 km, roughly half an hour at an easy pace. You don’t have to do all of it. A short walk and a sit can be enough. Give the exercise groups their space, ask before taking close-up photos and only join in if invited.
Long Bien Bridge and the wholesale market
From the northern end of the Old Quarter, Long Bien Bridge (Cầu Long Biên) is within reach for sunrise. The wholesale market below it works through the night, with much of the trading done before dawn. An early bus arrival gives you a better chance of seeing it busy.
Stay on the pedestrian path, keep away from the railway tracks and respect any barriers. After a 5am flight, save the bridge for another morning. In summer, the sun may be up while you’re still at the airport.
Quang Ba flower market
Quang Ba flower market (Chợ hoa Quảng Bá) is at 236 Au Co Street, roughly 5 km north of the Old Quarter. It runs overnight and is busiest in the small hours, so at dawn you’ll usually catch the end of the wholesale rush.
This one works better after an early bus, once your bags are stored. If your flight lands at 5am, head straight to the hotel.
Flag-raising at Ba Dinh Square
The flag at Ba Dinh Square normally goes up at 6am from April to October and 6:30am from November to March, according to the mausoleum management. It’s free to watch from the permitted area in front of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Dress respectfully, stay quiet during the ceremony and do what the guards ask.
For October 2026 visitors: the mausoleum is closed for maintenance from 4 September through 2 November 2026. The government notice gives 3 November as the date visits are due to restart.
The closure is only for visits inside the mausoleum. The flag ceremony happens outdoors, but check whether access to the square has changed before you go.
Outside that closure, the mausoleum normally opens for visits on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, from 7:30am in April–October and 8am in November–March. Mondays and Fridays are usually closed. Public holidays can change things.
Breakfast before the cafes open
- Pho Gia Truyen, 49 Bat Dan Street: beef pho, paid for in cash, often with a queue. Michelin lists the morning hours as 6–10am. Have your notes ready when you join the line.
- Xoi Yen, 35B Nguyen Huu Huan Street: sticky rice from around 6am. Xoi xeo has mung bean and fried shallots. Meat and other toppings cost extra, so check the menu prices before you order.
- A street stall near the hotel: after travelling overnight, a nearby pho or banh mi seller may be as far as you want to go. Choose somewhere busy, ask what it costs before ordering and pay with small notes.
Egg coffee at Cafe Giang
Xoi Yen and Cafe Giang are a short walk apart on Nguyen Huu Huan Street, which makes them an easy breakfast pair. Have sticky rice first, then head to Cafe Giang at number 39 for egg coffee. It opens around 7am, but don’t expect the doors to open at exactly seven.
My Hanoi egg coffee guide has more on the drink’s history and other places to try it.
Hanoi at 5am: Sunrise and Weather, Month by Month
For much of the year, it’s still dark in Hanoi at 5am. May, June and July are the exception. The sky starts to get light before 5am, and the sun comes up a little later.
| Month | Sunrise, local time |
|---|---|
| January | 6:36am |
| February | 6:26am |
| March | 6:05am |
| April | 5:38am |
| May | 5:19am |
| June | 5:14am |
| July | 5:23am |
| August | 5:35am |
| September | 5:43am |
| October | 5:51am |
| November | 6:06am |
| December | 6:25am |
Times are from Time and Date’s Hanoi sun calendar for the 15th of each month in 2026. They aren’t monthly averages. Vietnam stays on UTC+7 all year and doesn’t use daylight saving.
December to February: the damp can make winter mornings feel chilly. Have a light jacket within reach, and pack another layer if a cold spell is forecast.
May to September: it can already feel warm and sticky before the sun is properly up. Carry water and a light rain jacket. If a heavy downpour hits, you may end up indoors instead of walking round the lake.
Spring and autumn: October and November often bring pleasant walking weather, but it changes from year to year. Check the forecast for your actual dates. It will tell you more than any general seasonal guide. Vietnam Tourism’s weather guide has more on Hanoi’s seasons.
Going Straight to Ha Long Bay or Flying Out Again?
A cruise pickup on the morning you land
A 5am landing may leave time for a morning cruise pickup. But then a lot has to go right. The flight has to land on time, the passport queue has to move, and the drive to the meeting point has to go smoothly. Talk to the cruise company before you book that connection.
Give the company your flight details and get the pickup time and place confirmed. Find out how long they can wait and what happens if you miss the transfer. They may be able to collect you from the airport, but agree the price before you count on it.
I’d spend the first night in Hanoi if missing the cruise would mean losing a lot of money. And if you do go the same day, skip the sightseeing that morning. My Ha Long Bay overnight cruise review covers what the cruise itself is like.
A same-day flight from Noi Bai
Thinking of going into town between flights? Start with your next airline check-in deadline and work backwards. Leave enough time for the drive back, traffic and the airport formalities. After an international arrival, you also need permission to enter Vietnam. An “afternoon flight” can leave you less free time than it sounds.
If the gap is short, a shower or sleep pod at Noi Bai makes more sense than the trip into town. If you have plenty of time, store your bags somewhere secure and keep it to breakfast and a walk by the lake before heading back to the airport.
Is Hanoi Safe at 5am?
Hoan Kiem Lake has cleaners, vendors and exercise groups around as morning gets going, which is why it’s my choice for an early walk. Some side streets stay dark and quiet much longer. Before people are out, take a car to the hotel or wait somewhere with staff.
Near the road, keep a firm hold on your phone and bag, and keep your passport and cash zipped away. For the airport ride, use your booked driver or the official taxi rank.
Use crossings and follow the signals where they’re available. Wait for a suitable gap and keep watching the traffic as you cross. People may step out while motorbikes move around them, but you can’t rely on riders doing that for you. The roads only get busier as the morning goes on.
Hanoi Early Morning Arrival: FAQ
What can I do in Hanoi at 5am?
If you’re already in the centre, head to Hoan Kiem Lake and watch the morning exercise groups. If you’ve just landed at 5am, it’s different. Immigration, your bags and the drive from the airport come first.
Is there a bus from Noi Bai Airport at 5am?
Bus 17 starts at 5:10am from T1 and costs 15,000 VND per person. Bus 86 starts later, at 7am, and costs 50,000 VND. If you land at T2 and want Bus 17, allow time for the shuttle to T1. The airport transport table compares the options.
How much is a Grab from Noi Bai to the Old Quarter?
A standard car is roughly 250,000–400,000 VND, with any extra airport charges on top. That’s only an estimate. The price in the app changes with demand and the car you pick.
Should I book the previous night for a 5am arrival?
Yes, if you want a room straight away. For a morning arrival on 12 October, book from 11 October and get the hotel to confirm it will hold the room. To stay that evening too, book the night of the 12th as well.
Where can I leave my bags before check-in?
Start with your hotel. Many keep bags free for arriving guests, as long as someone is at reception to take them. If not, book a storage place that’s open when you arrive.
Can I shower at Noi Bai Airport after arriving?
Yes. VATC ShowerPod is in T2’s public area on the second floor, with a listed price of 200,000 VND for 30 minutes. It advertises 24-hour service, but contact the operator to book your time and confirm the total.
Can I sleep at Noi Bai Airport?
Yes, VATC SleepPod has rooms in the public areas of both terminals. An hourly booking is for at least three hours, and check-in between midnight and 6am adds a surcharge. A shower is a separate booking. The sleep and shower section gives the prices.
What time does the Sapa night train reach Hanoi?
Chapa lists the SP4 from Lao Cai as arriving at 5:35am. Go by the time on your ticket, and work out which station exit you’re using before you book a car.
What time do cafes open in Hanoi?
Many open around 7am, including Cafe Giang at 39 Nguyen Huu Huan Street. Before that, try a breakfast stall near your hotel.
What time is sunrise in Hanoi?
For the middle of the month, the times here range from 5:14am in June to 6:36am in January. The monthly table gives you a rough idea, but look up sunrise for your exact travel date.
Is the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum open in October 2026?
No. It’s closed for maintenance from 4 September through 2 November 2026, and visits are due to restart on 3 November. The outdoor flag ceremony is separate, but check whether there are any changes to square access.
Your 5am Arrival Checklist
- Documents: passport, any visa approval you need, and copies saved offline.
- Hotel dates: the night before booked if you want a room straight away, and the hotel’s reply saved.
- Bags: somewhere that will take them at your arrival time, plus its address and contact number.
- Transport: ride app ready, private pickup confirmed or bus details saved.
- Internet: eSIM set up or a plan for getting connected after landing.
- Cash: enough dong for breakfast and a few other small purchases.
- Day bag: valuables, medication, a jacket or rain layer for the season, and anything else you’ll need before check-in.
- Offline map: hotel address saved in Vietnamese and the route from your drop-off point.
If you do just one thing before the trip, get the hotel’s reply and save it on your phone. A room waiting for you and a place to leave your bags make for two very different mornings. Once that’s sorted, breakfast and the rest can fit around it.
